A few tips on one of my favorite parts of Northern India:

1.  Monasteries
The Himalayan region is mostly Tibetan Buddhist with a plethora of whitewashed monasteries. A few highlights include the 11th century Chhoskhor Temple Complex in Alchi and the ruins of Leh Palace that overlook the main town. Many host colorful Buddhist festivals during the summer months including 11th century Lamayuru and 1672 Hemis monasteries.

2.  Adventure

If you love trekking, climbing or cycling, then head up to Ladakh! Contact local tour operators in Leh, the transit hub, to help organize permits. For a challenge, consider Khardung La – the highest motorable pass at 18,380 feet.

3. Homestays
Consider planning your trekking between various homestays. It’s a great way to meet the locals and enjoy the best food and tea in the region.

4.   Momos
Be sure to try momos – a Tibetan dumpling filled with veggies or chicken/lamb. It is served with soup and dipping sauces.

5.  Jewelry Shopping
Leh is the tourist hub for the region and a shopping mecca for pashminas and jewelry. Thanks to the large Tibetan influence, turquoise, lapis and coral are in abundance. Nearby Alchi has a smaller market with great finds.
